“The time is out of joint” (1.5.210).
1. Hamlet’s relationships with the other characters in the play are complicated. Choose three relationships; analyze how Hamlet is impacted by each (three quotations – one for each relationship). 60 points
Claudius- Claudius is Hamlet's new step father. He married Hamlets mother 2 months after King Hamlet died. That is a quick decision after you have been together with someone for so long, 2 months after he died you are already re married. Hamlet is disgusted with his mothers decision and he feels that she is making a really bad decision and he doesn't care for her anymore. Claudius says that he needs to get over himself saying that his father is dead and that he should be happy for his mother that she has found someone else in her life to love. This even makes Hamlet even more mad because Claudius just pretty much told him that he was immature and he needs to get over his feelings. I am on hamlets side because if my father died i would mourn it for more than 2 months. And if my mother got married that quick after it. Hamlet thinks something is fishy with Claudius. He thinks he just married the queen so he could be king. He investigates and tries to find out how his father died because he knows it was a murder. Hamlet puts on a play and re acts his fathers death by having king claudius (actor) pour poisen down King Hamlets ear. When this scene was in the play and Claudius saw it he stood up and he said that he needed fresh air. When Hamlet saw this he knew that he was the one who killed his father by pouring poison down his ear." The king wants Hamlet to go to England to be excuted. He tells Hamlet that he is sending him their to go clear his mind and all of his problems. But he was really sending him their to be excuted. He had Rosencrantz and Guildenstern take Hamlet their. Hamlet knew about the letter they were going to show the king of England. So what he did was switch the letter from saying hamlet was a trader and needed to be executed to have it be saying that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were the real traders and they were the ones that needed to be excuted. And that's what happened those to were executed. Now might i do it, he is a praying, and now I'll do it (he draws his sword.) and so he goes to heaven and so am i revenged. that would be scanned: "A villian kills my father, and for that, i, his sole son, do teh same villian send to heaven. " (3.3.80-83). This quote is when Hamlet is going to kill Claudius but he is praying so he would go to heaven. He wants to kill him when he is drunk or doing something when he would go to hell. So he waits to kill him. Hamlet doesn't like Claudius and he thinks he deserves death for what he did to his father.
Horatio- Horatio is one of Hamlets good freinds. He is loyal to Hamlet and he doesn't betray him like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He went to the university in Wittenberg to study with the prince. After Hamlet died, he told the rest of the Hamlet story. In the beginning of the story Horatio saw the ghost which is Hamlets father. He tells Hamlet that he saw him and he and Horatio go and and try to find the ghost and they do. This shows me that Hamlet has a lot of trust and he knows that Horatio is really loyal to him since he believed him when he told him about his fathers ghost. If my father died and someone said they saw my dad's ghost I wouldn't believe them in the first place. And I would probably get angry with them when they said it. " Hamlet: It will not speak. Then i will follow it. Horatio: Do not my lord. Hamlet: why, what should be the fear? i do not set my life at a pin's fee and for my woul, what can it do to that, being a think immortal as itself? it waves me forth again. I'll follow it."(1.4.70-75).This is when Horatio, Marcellus, and Hamlet go and find the ghost. Hamlet is curious of who it is because it goes away, so he follows it and Horatio thinks that is a bad thing to do. I think that Horatio and Hamlet have the kind of relationships that i have with my friends. We are loyal and we trust each other and we don't ever turn our backs on one another.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern- These 2 also went to Wittenberg with Horatio and Hamlet. Both these 2 were realy good friends with Hamlet. But then they turned their back on him and they spyed on Horatio for King Claudius. Hamlet liked them in the beginning but then once he figured out he was a trader he didn't like them anymore. Once he found out that Claudius killed his dad by pouring poisen into his ear. Claudius wanted him to go to England. So Rosencrantz and Guilednstern took him there to the king. They gave the king a letter that was suppose to say how Hamlet was a trader and that he should be executed, but instead Hamlet found out about this evil plan and he changed the his name out of the letter and put Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. " Hamlet: Ay, Sir, taht soaks up the king's countenace, his rewards, his authorites. but such officers do the ding best service in teh end. He keeps them like an ape and apple in the corner of his jaw, first mouthed, gleaned, it is but squeezing you, and, sponge, you shall be dry again." (4.2.15-20). This quote shows how the people under King Claudius are bossed around and they are not allowed to be their true person inside him. This is Hamlet saying to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern how they are just the King's two people that he just bosses around.
2. Revenge, redemption, loyalty, indecision, love, appearance vs. reality, and betrayal are significant themes in the play. Choose three of these and explain how each theme affects the characters and the outcome of the play (three quotations – one for each theme). 60 points
Revenge- In the book Hamlet thier is a lot of Revenge. Hamlet is looking for revenge the whole time against his step father/ uncle Claudius. The reason he is looking for revenge is because he killed his father. He killed him by pouring poisen down his ear. It was a very painful death. He also is mad at the king because he married his mother 2 months after he killed King Hamlet. He is very angry in whole book at Claudius. Claudius tells Hamlet to pretty much get over himself and just accept that his father is dead. In the end of the book the king sets up a fight betwene Laertes and Hamlet and if Laertes does prevail like the king wanted to he would give Hamlet a glass of wine. The king would tell him it's a reward for winning against Laertes. Instead the queen drinks it and dies. This makes Hamlet even more mad and angry towards the king. He gets mad because now the king killed his Mom and his Dad. He stabs Claudius with the poisened sword. He dies but so does hamlet. " Hamlet: Here, thou incestuous, damned dane, drink off the potion. Is thy union here. ( Forcing him to drink the poisen.) Follow my mother." (5.2.356-359). This quote shows what Hamlet has been looking for this whole time. Revenge on Claudius. Even though he died he got what he wanted and that was for Claudius to go to hell.
Loyalty- Loyalty was a big part of the book Hamlet. Horatio was always a loyal and helpful Hamlet through the whole play. His mom wasn't loyal to King Hamlet. Because after he was brutely murdered she married the person that killed him 2 months after he died. "Queen: Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted color off, and let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark. Do not forever with thy vailed lids seek for thy noble father in the dust. Thou know'tis common; all that lives must die, passing through nature to eternity." (1.2.70-75) This quote is the queen talking to Hamlet telling him to just get over his fathers death saying that death is a part of life and saying that he is going to heaven and having eternal life. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern also don't show loyalty to Hamlet when they turn their back on him to help Claudius. They spy on Hamlet for Claudius.
Betrayal- Betrayal is also a huge part of Hamlet. Claudius shows betrayal when he married his brothers wife after he killed his own brother. "'Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet to give these mourning duties to your father. But you must know your father lost a father, that father lost, lost his, and the survivor bound in filial obligation for some term to do obsequious sorrow. But to persever in obstiniate condolement is a course of imious stubbornous."(1.2.90-95). This quote shows how Claudius is really clever with the words he uses. It also shows how he is trying to make Hamlet sound like a stubborn baby for mourning the death of his father. Witch i think is wrong and that just shows how he betrayed him. So that he could be king. And the Queen also showed betrayal when she married Claudius. Hamlet and Horatio are the big 2 that don't show anything towards betrayal. I think their is a reason why they are good freinds. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern betrayed Hamlet becasue they were friends at the Wittenberg but then they spied on Hamlet because the king told them too.
3. Has Hamlet changed?
You may compare the soliloquies from
1.2.133-164
2.2.575-636
3.1.63-99
4.4.33-69
or you may use other textual evidence that you have prepared to answer this question (three quotations – beginning, “middle,” and end). 60 points
In the beginning of the book Hamlet is depressed and he is just mourning the death of his father. He is also upset that is mother is already re married and that his father was murdered by his uncle. Horatio tells him that he saw a ghost and he believe that it is his fathers ghost. He is very optimistic about his fathers ghost. "Hamlet: Did you not speak to it? Horatio: My lord i did but answer made it none. Yet once metthough it lifed up its head and did address itself to motion, like as it would speak; but even then the morning cock crew lud, and at the sound it shrunk in haste away and vanished from our sight. Hamlet: 'Tis very strange." (1.2.225-230).
In the middle of the book he is seeking out revenge on Claudius he had a plot to kill him but when he went up to kill him he was praying and since he was praying at the moment he died he would go to heaven. Hamlet didn't want him in the place where he would like it there. He wanted him in HELL! " Hamlet I'll be with you straigth. Go a little before how all occasions do inform against me and spur my dull revenge." This quote is Hamlet talking to himself about how angry he is and how bad he wants revenge and for him to finally be happy becasue he gots revenge.
In the end of the book he is in a fighting mood. He kills Rosencrantz and Guildenstern by tricking the king of england and the Claudius the king. By writing their names on the letter saying that hamlet was the trader but he changed it to say that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were the traders. So they got executed not hamlet. He doesn't care if he dies he just wants revenge on the king. He finally gets his revenge on the king when he dies on act 5 scene 2. Along with Laertes. The person Hamlet had to fight at the end of the book that was set up by the King. "Laertes: He is justly served. It is a poison tempered by himself exchange forgiveness with me, noble hamlet. Mine and my father's death come not upon theee, nor think on me." (5.2.359-265). This qoute is pretty much saying that it wasn't Hamlets fault that he died and it wasn't his own. It was king Claudius plan.
